Abstract
This study examines the status and characteristics of Daesoon Jinrihoe in the context of East Asian new religious culture, focusing on the modern significance of its religious practices. Through comparison with representative East Asian new religions such as Yiguandao in China and Tenrikyo in Japan, this study aims to identify both the universality and uniqueness of Daesoon Jinrihoe. Since the 19th century onward, East Asian societies have faced dual challenges: the impact of Western civilization and the destabilization of traditional order. In this context, various new religious movements emerged in each country, sharing common characteristics such as creative inheritance of traditional religious culture, this-worldly soteriology, and people-centered religious movements. This study analyzes the religious practices of Daesoon Jinrihoe in three aspects: ritual, education, and social activities. The research finds that Daesoon Jinrihoe has developed a unique system of practice that meets the demands of modern society while creatively reinterpreting elements of traditional East Asian religious culture. In terms of ritual, it has inherited traditional ceremonial culture while reinterpreting it in a modern context. With regards to education, it has achieved harmony between traditional master-disciple relationships and modern educational systems. As for its social activities, it has presented a new model for the public role of religion by providing professional and systematic social services. These findings provide a new perspective for understanding Korean new religions in the context of East Asian religious culture and highlight key implications for reconsidering the role and meaning of religion in modern society.
