Abstract
This paper examines the universal appeal of Han Kang’s literature through a narrative analysis of Human Acts (2014). The novel is notable for its strategic use of perspective and style, both of which serve to convey the characters’ emotional intensity. Han communicates truths that are unspeakable in the face of violence—truths that elude conventional language—through the affective experiences of her characters. To analyze this, the study applies Greimas’ semiotics of passion, focusing on how the protagonist, Dong-ho, comes to embody courage. Han Kang’s creation of Human Acts is rooted in two formative experiences: as a child, she learned about the May 18 Gwangju Uprising from family members, and she encountered Astrid Lindgren’s The Brothers Lionheart, which awakened her sense of human dignity. The courage to resist violence becomes a hallmark of Han’s protagonists, beginning with Human Acts and continuing throughout her later works. Through a semiotic analysis of Dong-ho’s emotional trajectory, this paper delineates five narrative phases: figuration(Constitution), Disposition, Pathémisation, Affectation(Emotion), and Moralization. In the figuration, Dong-ho experiences inner turmoil while witnessing a memorial service; in Disposition, he becomes aware of his circumstances and begins to feel anger; in Pathémisation, he recognizes the root of his confusion; in Affectation, his grief manifests physically; and in moralization, he embraces his role and exhibits courage. While Dong-ho completes this process before his death, the spirit of another character, Jeong-dae, remains trapped in the earlier stages, embodying suspicion and sorrow. Meanwhile, surviving students and laborers of the 1980 uprising demonstrate enduring affectual and moral transformation, thereby testifying to the ethical significance of their actions. Han Kang’s literary universality stems from the rhetoric of passion.Through it, she portrays both the global prevalence of violence and the unyielding dignity of the human spirit. Her protagonists—though fragile and wounded—strive to restore themselves with their own strength. Han meticulously traces this progression of passion and courage in each character, whether child or adult, man or woman. In I Do Not Bid Farewell (2021), these characters instill themselves with courage and act on their convictions. In The Greek Lessons (2011), Han reveals an aesthetics of healing—of both self and others—anchored in the fundamental human virtue of courage.
