Abstract
This article analyzes the writer Seo Jeong-ju's literary desire in the 1970s through an intertextual reading of his only novel “Seoksa Jangisoeui Sanchaek (A Walk with Master Jang Iso)” and the poems of the “Jilmajae Sinhwa (Jilmajae Myth)” series. Linked to each other, the two texts demonstrates how Seo envisioned his own unique aesthetics through his self-reflecting narratives and self-establishment of authorial stance during the 1970s. The novel, mainly written in the form of a first-person diary, is contextualized through the gaze of an editor-introducer and is further recontextualized by Seo's expansive authorial interventions during its serialization and publication. This structure is accompanied by the transformation of the in-text narrator's role from a mere assistant to the owner of narrative who selects the subjects, shapes the story line, and manages the narrative contents. The “Jilmajae Myth” poems, which are intricately intertwined with the novel's narrative, not only seek the controlling power of narrative but also reflect the instability of such imaginary power. They lead the narrative itself to the necessity of repeated re-construction and search for an aesthetic understanding of the principle that the real world constantly demands renewed engagement. The writing desire evident in both texts seeks to recontextualize the uncontrollable, othered world into manageable dimensions, thereby endowing the writer-as-narrator-and-aesthetician with a sense of control over the world. Seo Jeongju's literary and aesthetic exploration of narrative control in the 1970s reveals his deep-seated anxieties―both about the world and his identity as a writer―spanning from his early to late works. Examining not just “Seo Jeongju's aesthetics” but the relationship between Seo and aesthetics itself, this article attempts to lay the groundwork for a renewed exploration of his oeuvre―not as an embodiment of the aesthetics of “eternity”, but from the perspective of the eternity of aesthetics.
