조나단 에드워즈는 18세기 뉴잉글랜드 상황에서 공공신학을 전개하였다. 에드워즈의 관계적 존재론과 청교도 언약신학은 그의 공공신학을 위한 이론적 기초가 된다. 관계적 존재론에서 에드워즈는 하나님을 소통하는 존재로 이해한다. 하나님은 창조물과 좋은 것들을 나누기를 원하시는데 이로 인해 친밀한 관계 속에서 창조물의 행복은 하나님의 행복이 된다. 또한 청교도 언약신학의 영향 가운데 에드워즈는 그의 사회와 국가를운명공동체로 인식한다. 에드워즈는 공공신학에서 기독교인들의 공적인 삶과 기독교 지도자들의 역할을 다룬다. 기독교인들은 가난한 자들을 돌볼 책임이 있다. 국가는 인간의 삶에 안정성을 제공하고 국민의 권리를 보호한다는 점에서 중요하다. 기독교 지도자들은 기독교 정신을 가진 통치의 기술이 필요하다. 비록 충성심이 일반적으로 공공의 선으로 인식되지만 우리는 일종의 자기 사랑으로 그 한계를 볼 수 있다. 참된 사랑은 오직 하나님을 위한 사랑에서만 가능하다. 그의 공공신학은 기독교인들과 그들이 속한 사회와의유기적 연대성을 강조한다. 이는 오늘날 개인주의 사회에 중요한 도전을제시하고 공공신학의 발전을 위한 주요한 자료가 된다.
Abstract
Jonathan Edwards unfolded his public theology in the context of the 18thNew England. Edwards’ relational ontology and puritan covenant theologyis a theoretical basis for his public theology. In his relational ontology,Edwards understands God as a communicative Being. God wants to sharegood things with His creations. Their happiness becomes the happiness ofGod by communicating each other in close relationships. Also under theinfluence of the Puritan covenant theology, Edwards considers his societyand country as a destiny community. In his public theology, Edwards deals with the public life of Christiansand the roles of Christian leaders. Christians have a responsibility to carefor the poor. The state is important in regard to give stability to humanlife and to protect the rights of peoples. Christian leaders need the art ofgovernance with Christian spirit, Furthermore, Edwards recommendsthem to be responsible for their faith. Even though, loyalty is generallyrecognized as a public good, we could see loyalty as a kind of self-love. True love is only love for God. Edwards‘ public theology emphasizes the organic unity Christians with their society. This presents a significantchallenge in today’s individualistic society and offers a good source for thedevelopment of public theology.
