이 연구는 조나단 에드워즈의 도덕신학을 다루고 있다. 에드워즈는 17세기말부터 계몽주의 영향으로 발생한 도덕철학에 맞서 자신의 개혁신학을 기반으로 도덕신학을 발전시켰다. 에드워즈는 계몽주의 신학자로서 도덕철학자들의 주장들 중에 일부는 긍정적으로 받아들이면서도 그들이 도덕의 근간이 되는 하나님을 배제하고 인본주의적 도덕체계를 발전시키고 있음을 비판하며 이를 하나님 중심의 도덕이론으로 수정하고자 했다. 초반부는 에드워즈가 맞서야만 했던 당대 도덕철학의 발전과 그들의 논의 주제가 무엇이었는지를 고찰한다. 도덕철학자들은 공통적으로 인간의 선천적인 능력으로 이성(reason)과는 독립된 기관인 “도덕적 감각”(Moral Sense)을 가지고 있음을 주장하면서 긍정적이며 낙관적인 인간이해를 발전시켰다. 이어 그들은 도덕 이론과 개념들을 미적으로 승화시켜 도덕적 아름다움이나 조화, 계획 등을 중시하는 도덕의 미학을 발전시켰다. 에드워즈는 계몽주의 신학자로서 합리적으로 도덕철학을 다루고자 했기에, 도덕철학자들이 다루는 여러 이슈들을 섭렵하고 그들의 논의의 틀 안에서 그 한계를 개혁신학적 입장에서 보완하여 설명하고자 했다. 무엇보다 에드워즈는 도덕철학자들의 도덕적이며 긍정적인 인간 이해를 개혁신학적 원죄론에 근거해서 비판했으며 그들이 의도적으로 기독교의 하나님을 배제한 채 도덕이론들을 구성하고 있다고 보고 이에 반대해 하나님 의존적인 도덕이론을 신학적으로 재구성하고자했다. 여기에서 에드워즈는 도덕철학자들이 언급하고 있는 참된 덕(true virtue)의 본질은 하나님을 향한 사랑에서 시작됨을 분명히 했다. 이어 도덕철학자들이 공리주의적 입장에서 우주 전체의 질서와 조화를 도덕의 원리로 보았던 것처럼, 에드워즈는 이 실재의 문제를 하나님과 연관된 “관계적 존재론”(Relational Ontology)으로 발전시켰다. 에드워즈는 이에 머물지 않고 도덕의 문제를 신학의 핵심이 되는 구원론과도 연결시켜 도덕적 감각에 맞서는 영적 감각인 “새로운 마음의 감각”(New Sense of the Heart)의 개념을 발전시키면서 성령의 역할을 조망하였다. 주제어: 조나단 에드워즈, 도덕철학, 도덕신학, 덕, 보편존재, 인자함
Abstract
This study deals with the Moral Theology of Jonathan Edwards. Against Moral Philosophers in 17century, Edwards develops his Moral Theology based on Reformed Theology. As a Enlightenment theologian, he accepts some arguments of moral philosophers but denies their humanistic theories ignoring God and Reformed view of moral. For this, we will examine the arguments of moral philosophers Edwards was influenced. They especially argue of the concept of “moral sense” as the natural ability of humans. The sense is independent from reason in enjoying humans’moral act. They also unfold their moral theories in aesthetic level emphasizing the concepts of beauty, harmony, and design etc. Edwards criticizes moral philosophers’positive view of humans with Reformed doctrine of original sin. He also wants to reconsider and revise the contemporary view of moral philosophers with his Reformed theology emphasizing total depravity of humans and divine view of moral. He emphasizes true virtue focused on God as General being and the moral source. Finally, Edwards develops humanistic view of moral into divine view of moral in his moral theology. He argues his moral theology in the controversy with moral philosophers in 18th Century New England.
