18세기 뉴잉글랜드의 개혁 신학자이자 목회자인 조나단 에드워즈는 자연과학의 발전으로 정통주의 신론에 대한 이신론의 도전에 직면해야 했다. 이신론은 신적 창조는 인정하지만 세상에 내재하여 인간을 포함한 창조물과 소통하고 교제하는 하나님의 섭리사상을 부인했다. 이신론의 하나님은 세상과 멀리 떨어져 있기에 창조물들에게는 매우 낯설고 소외된 존재이다. 이신론의 심각한 폐해를 인식한 에드워즈는 하나님을 소통하는 존재로서 해석하여 정통주의 신론을 적극적으로 변호하였다. 그의 소통하는 존재로서 하나님 이해는 그가 전개한 창조론, 모형론, 구원론, 종말론의 신학적 기초가 된다. 이 과정에서 에드워즈는 이성의 한계를 지적하며 신적 계시의 필요성을 역설하고, 하나님에 대해 소통하는 속성을 지닌 존재라는 인식을 배경으로 창조의 목적으로부터 창조세계의 유지와 종말에 성취될 하나님과의 연합을 주장한다. 특히 그의 모형론은 신적 계시인 성경뿐 아니라 자연 세계가 하나님의 메시지를 담고 있음을 보여준다. 18세기에 유행하던 이신론은 현재를 살아가고 있는 현대인들에게도 상당히 매력적인 하나님에 대한 이해를 제시하고 있다. 18세기 에드워즈가 이신론에 대항해 정통주의 입장에서 변증한 소통하는 하나님 이해는 21세기 기독교인들에게도 하나님이 어떤 분이심을 확인해주는 소중한 유산이 된다.
Abstract
In 18th Century New England, Jonathan Edwards faced Deisticchallenges to Christian orthodox view of divinity due to the development ofnatural sciences. Though Deism acknowledges the divine creation, it deniesthe divine immanence and providence that communicates and associateswith creatures including humans. The Deist God places God far from theworld, making him very strange and alienated to His creations. Recognizingits serious harm, Edwards passionately defended the orthodox view ofdivinity with his understanding of God as a communicative being. His viewis based on the theology of creation, typology, soteriology, and eschatology. In his defense, Edwards points out the limitations of reason, emphasizingthe necessity of divine revelation, and argues for the union with Godto be achieved at the end of the universe based on divine attributes ofcommunication. In particular, Edwards’ typology shows there are divinemessages not just in the Bible but in the natural world as well. Deism hasbeen popular and attractive to humans in modern times as well as in the18th century. It is sure that Edwards’ view of God as a communicative beingagainst Deism provided a precious theological source to confirm who Godis to modern Christians.
