Abstract
This article offers a critical review of Lee Jong-ho’s Yeom Sang-seop’s Literature and Alternative Modernity, focusing on the book’s proposal of “alternative modernity” as a methodological framework for rereading Yeom Sang-seop, a canonized figure in modern Korean literature. By examining the book’s central arguments, this review evaluates its scholarly contributions, interpretive significance, and implications for future research on Korean literary modernity. Yeom Sang-seop has conventionally been positioned as a representative writer of modernity within Korean literary historiography, while interpretations of his work have simultaneously served as a key site for testing how modernity itself has been conceptualized and categorized. Against this backdrop, Lee’s study interrogates the historiographical inertia that has characterized Yeom as an eclectic, moderate, and middle-class writer aligned with a supposedly value-neutral modernity. The book thus calls into question the assumptions underpinning modernity-centered critical frameworks and the processes through which the literary canon has been stabilized. Rather than seeking to reposition Yeom Sang-seop as either internal or external to the canon, Lee’s notion of “alternative modernity” functions as a self-reflexive critique of the discourse on modernity produced within Korean literary studies. By reconstructing Yeom’s encounters with the March First Movement, the Osaka Declaration of Independence, and the labor movement in relation to contemporary anarchist thought, the book demonstrates that these experiences constituted a crucial ideological foundation of his literary imagination. Through this analysis, Lee argues that Yeom’s literature does more than represent the contradictions of modernity; it radicalizes these contradictions by pushing them to their conceptual and practical limits, thereby articulating an emancipatory project of alternative modernity. As a form of practical revolutionary theory, this concept foregrounds literature and art as imaginative forces capable of prefiguring modes of life oriented toward democracy and labor emancipation—goals that remain unrealized in the present. This review concludes that Lee’s study offers a provocative intervention into both Yeom Sang-seop scholarship and the broader field of modern Korean literary studies, reconfiguring the relationship between literature, modernity, and political practice, while reopening the question of literature’s possibilities beyond dominant models of modernity.
