Abstract
This study offers a quantitative linguistic analysis of interrogative sentences in the Inner Chapters of the Zhuangzi, with particular attention to their stylistic distribution and rhetorical functions. While previous scholarship has largely focused on philosophical interpretations or philological examinations, the present research combines corpus-based methods with close contextual reading to reveal how interrogatives operate as an essential discursive mechanism in the text. Using a custom-annotated dataset of all interrogatives in the Inner Chapters, the study first examines the frequency and distribution of major interrogative markers, including classical Chinese wh-words and sentence-final particles. By segmenting each chapter into proportional thirds, the analysis identifies positional tendencies and stylistic patterns in the deployment of interrogatives across sections. A sliding-window method is further applied to detect local concentration peaks, enabling the identification of extended sequences of interrogatives and their narrative–argumentative significance. The results show that interrogatives are not randomly dispersed but form distinctive clusters that correlate with moments of conceptual transition and shifts in argumentative tension. Beyond formal analysis, the study classifies interrogatives into three functional categories—Reflection-Inducing, Emphatic/Refutational, and Information-Seeking—based on their pragmatic roles within context. The Reflection-Inducing type prompts epistemological or ontological reconsideration, guiding readers toward self-reflection rather than eliciting explicit answers. The Emphatic/Refutational type serves to undermine preceding claims or reinforce paradoxical assertions characteristic of the Zhuangzi’s discourse. Information-Seeking interrogatives appear less frequently, yet often function as textual pivots that initiate subsequent refutational or reflective development. The interaction among these types reveals a cyclic rhetorical structure in which interrogatives propel the flow of thought and shape the philosophical movement of the text. Overall, this study demonstrates that interrogatives in the Inner Chapters fulfill far more than a grammatical function: they are a strategic device through which the Zhuangzi constructs, destabilizes, and redirects meaning. By integrating quantitative methods with rhetorical analysis, the research offers a new perspective on how linguistic form and philosophical argumentation are intertwined in early Chinese thought.
