Abstract
This study offers a rhetorical analysis of the introductions to the miscellaneous essays (雜著文) contained in Pyo-rong-eul-cheom (표롱을첨), a collection of writings by Hong Gil-ju (洪吉周), a prominent literatus of the late Joseon period. The introduction of a text is not merely a preliminary remark but a crucial starting point that captures the reader’s attention, sets the trajectory of the argument, and provides the foundation for persuasive reasoning. In argumentative writing in particular, the introduction functions as a strategic locus for orienting the discourse and securing the legitimacy of persuasion. Accordingly, examining the modes of development and rhetorical features of these introductions is essential for clarifying the rhetorical and logical functions of classical prose openings. This research classifies the introductions in Hong Gil-ju’s essays into four principal types—assertive, question-and-answer/dialogic, comparative/contrastive, and refutational—on the basis of their recurrent characteristics. It then analyzes the modes of development and persuasive effects associated with each type. The results indicate that assertive introductions present a thesis through categorical declarations; question-and-answer/dialogic introductions engage readers and stimulate reflection through inquiry and response; comparative/contrastive introductions foreground issues and accentuate key arguments through juxtaposition; and refutational introductions establish the validity of new claims by contesting and redefining existing discourse. The findings show that these introductions served not simply as preliminaries, but as rhetorical mechanisms that prepared the architecture of persuasion and shifted the reader’s perspective.
