Abstract

This study explores the homiletical implications of the via negativa inherent in the apophatic theology of Pseudo-Dionysius. In his theological framework, God is understood as utterly transcendent―beyond the full grasp of human knowledge and the adequate reach of human language. Therefore, theological discourse is required to proceed not by way of affirmation, but through negation―denying particular attributes of God so as to gesture toward the divine mystery. This method, central to Pseudo-Dionysius’s theology, is rhetorically embodied in the use of litotes, a figure of speech that affirms by means of negation. His use of litotes may be categorized into three forms: the negation of affirmation, the negation of negative meaning, and double negation. These rhetorical strategies carry significant implications for homiletical practice, especially when examined through the classical rhetorical categories of logos, ethos, and pathos. From the standpoint of pathos, litotes invites listeners into a participatory role, treating them as partners in the preaching event. From the perspective of ethos, the preacher’s use of understatement contributes to an ethos of credibility and trust. In terms of logos, litotes enables a sermonic movement from negation to affirmation, thereby supporting a proclamation that is both theologically nuanced and rhetorically effective.
