항해 홍길주 산문의 수사적 특징 연구-표롱을첨(縹礱乙籤) 소재 잡저문(雜著文)을 중심으로-

Abstract

This paper analyzes the characteristics of rhetoric in the prose writing of Hanghae (沆瀣) Hong Gil-ju (洪吉周, 1786-1841), a writer in the late Joseon Dynasty. This article analyzed the rhetorical function and role, such as question-and-answer, analogy, repetition and enumeration, which are characteristic rhetorical techniques in his prose writing, focusing on Jabjeomun (雜著文), which was included in 「Jabmungi (雜文紀)」 and 「Jabmunbyeolgi (雜文別紀)」 of “Pyorongeulcheom (縹礱乙籤).” First, it was found that the ‘question and answer’ used in Jabjeomun of Hanghae contributed to presenting the topic of the work, arousing attention, developing key arguments, and strengthening the logic of arguments. The ‘question-and-answer’ used in Jabjeomun appears in the form of a self question-and-answer in which questions are asked and answered by oneself, a serial question-and-answer in which questions and answers are linked in a chain, and a conversational question-and-answer in which two characters have a conversation. The self-questioning and answering method played a role in suggesting the topic of the entire article, inducing the interest of the reader, and calling attention. The serial question-and-answer method contributed to developing key arguments and strengthening the logic of arguments. The conversational question-and-answer method was used to convey the knowledge in an indirect but vivid and impressive way through dialogues of the characters. Next, it was found that analogy promoted the reader's understanding by expressing the meaning easily and concisely by comparing it to everyday objects and concrete phenomena and induces the reader to infer and enlighten himself. Lastly, repetition and enumeration contributed to strengthening the persuasiveness by supporting the claim by repeatedly presenting similar examples or listing sufficient evidence. As such, it is found that the rhetoric used in the works of Hanghae is not just decorative, but a device that plays an important role in convincing readers in the process of argument.
