Abstract

This study explores the application of contents tourism in Japanese Studies education, with a particular focus on the course Japanese Cultural Contents. By analyzing students’ presentations and pre-/post-class surveys, the following conclusions were drawn. First, when planning contents tourism in various Japanese cities, students most frequently utilized animation. This indicates that animation is the most familiar and accessible form of regional content for learners. Second, students most often employed festivals when comparing regional contents between Japanese cities and those in Gwangju/Jeonnam. Given the prominence of matsuri culture across Japan and the abundance of festivals in Gwangju/Jeonnam, it can be inferred that students found such comparisons easy and effective. Third, students’ preferred travel destinations in Japan shifted after taking the course. Whereas their initial interests centered on major cities, post-course preferences expanded to smaller cities such as Matsuyama. This suggests that incorporating both metropolitan and regional cities into the course materials, along with implementing presentation activities on contents tourism, fostered students’ greater interest in local areas. Finally, it is necessary to design customized lessons that reflect changes in learners’ interests. Since the shift from large cities to smaller ones was observed, the curriculum should place greater emphasis on regional cities as well as less familiar metropolitan areas. At the same time, innovative teaching methods are required to capture students’ attention when introducing both unfamiliar metropolitan and regional cities.
