Abstract

This study estimates the impact of the proportion of the elderly population on per capita Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) using panel data from 17 metropolitan and provincial regions in Korea spanning the years 2000 to 2021. The estimation results, derived from a two-way fixed-effects model, indicate that a 1% increase in the proportion of the population aged 60 and above leads to a decrease in per capita GRDP by 0.4177% to 0.5644%. By industry, a 1% increase in the proportion of the elderly population reduces the per capita total value added of the manufacturing sector by 0.7573% to 0.7697%, while it has no statistically significant impact on the per capita total value added of the service sector. Furthermore, the increase in the proportion of the elderly population negatively affects capital investment, with a particularly significant decline in investment in intellectual property products.
