The concept of ‘class' is a very important concept in studying Mao Zedong's thought and practice. Until recently, however, Mao Zedong's concept of “class” has been discussed only in terms of its connection with peasants, and we cannot deny the fact that there is no close examination of how Mao Zedong's concept of “class” was constructed and applied. The main purpose of this paper is to explore how Mao Zedong's ‘class' concept of the 1920s was constructed and how it worked in a concrete process of practice. To this end, this paper examines Marx's theoretical review of the concept of ‘class' and suggests that there is some gap between ‘class' as an economic category and ‘class consciousness' as a political category. It will be examined from the methodological point whether the problem consciousness is generated. I will trace the process and meaning of Mao's “class” concept in the 1920s, using this consciousness as a point of contention.
