Dissemination and Reception of Marx’s Concept of Ideology by China’s First Generation Marxists: Focusing on Li Da’s Interpretation of Marx’s Concept of Ideology

The process and way of Li Da’s (as the researcher and disseminator of Marxism at its early stage in China) interpretation of Marx’s ideology, an important concept in Marxism philosophy, and their contemporary significance,cannot be ignored in today’s study over the localization process of Marxism (philosophy) in China. This paper believes that after having experienced three periods,1920s, 1930s and 1940s, Li Da has made a sinicized interpretation of Marx’s concept of ideology in a special way in his related works through the translation and introduction of major theoretical works (particularly the Marxism textbook of the former Soviet Union) on Marxism in foreign countries, drawing on related arguments from his fellow researchers at home (especially Ai Siqi),and the interpretation of and study on the classics by political leaders (especially Mao Zedong’s On Practice and On Contradiction). What the interpretation provides,including the sociological perspective, the analysis framework of historical materialism, the compiling style of textbook and the ways of translating and interpreting classics, all have exerted profound influence over later and even contemporary study on Marx’s concept of ideology and theoretical research.
