The goal of this paper is to explore Mao Zedong’s own logic underneath the transition from the Hundred Flowers Campaign to the Anti-Rightist Movement by examining Mao Zedong’s own writings and speeches of the time. The paper intends to shed a new light on the Anti-Rightist Movement that has been considered one of the biggest tragic events in the history of the PRC or the single event that has determined the oppressive nature of Chinese government up to now. The paper argues that Mao did not make an abrupt transition inexplicable to himself, but he understood the Hundred Flowers Campaign and the Anti-Rightist Movement as different stages of the same “Rectification” movement, which he gradually defined as the correct way to handle contradictions among the people.
