초등학생들의 온라인 뉴스 읽기 경험에 대한 질적 연구 : 사회과 뉴스 리터러시 교육의 함의를 중심으로

다양한 온라인 플랫폼을 통해 뉴스 생산과 소비가 이루어지고 있는 뉴스 이용 환경에서 우리는 많은 사회 문제를마주하고 있으며, 이에 따라 뉴스를 비판적으로 수용하는 뉴스 리터러시의 함양이 요구되고 있다. 본 연구는 초등학생들의뉴스 읽기 과정에서 나타나는 현상과 의미를 심층적으로 분석하여 사회과 뉴스 리터러시 교육을 위한 시사점을모색한 질적 연구이다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 초등학교 6학년 학생들을 대상으로 7개월 동안 온라인 뉴스를 읽게하여 뉴스 읽기 과정을 참여 관찰하고 심층 면담을 통해 온라인 뉴스 읽기 양상과 뉴스 읽기 경험에 담긴 의미를탐색하였다. 연구 결과, 초등학생들은 뉴스 추천 알고리즘에 의해 연성 뉴스가 반복적으로 생성·채택되는 구조 속에서사건·사고나 대중적인 인기를 끄는 뉴스들을 편향적·무비판적으로 받아들이며 사회를 탐색해 가고 있었다. 그리고가짜 뉴스에 대한 주의보 속에서 그 실체와 영향력을 제대로 인지하지 못해 피상적으로 경계하는 양상을 보였다. 그러나 초등학생들의 사회적 관심과 뉴스에 대한 이해를 높이고 뉴스를 비판적으로 성찰할 수 있는 사회·정치적대화는 제공되지 않았다. 본 연구는 장기간의 참여 관찰과 면담을 통해 초등학생들의 온라인 뉴스 읽기 양상 및문제점을 심층적으로 드러내어 초등학교 뉴스 리터러시 교육을 위한 시사점을 제공하였다는 의의가 있다. 그리고초등학생들의 뉴스 읽기 효과를 높이기 위해서는 양질의 사회·정치적 대화가 전제되어야 함을 보여주었다는 점에서학문적·교육적 의미를 찾을 수 있다.
Abstract
In the news-use environment, where news production and consumption are carried out through various online platforms, we face many social problems. Thus, there is a need for the cultivation of news literacy characterized by critical news acceptance. This qualitative study aimed to contribute to social studies news literacy education by deeply analyzing phenomena and meanings that appear in the news reading process of elementary school students. The study found that elementary school students were exploring society by accepting news on events, accidents, and popular topics following a structure in which soft news was repeatedly generated and adopted by news recommendation algorithms. Elementary school students were superficially wary of fake news because they did not properly recognize its substance and influence. However, there was no opportunity for social and political dialogue to enhance elementary school students' social interest and understanding of the news and to critically reflect on the news. This study is significant in that it provides implications for elementary school news literacy education by revealing, through a comprehensive analysis, the online news reading patterns and problems of elementary school students through long-term participatory observation and interviews. In addition, it has academic and educational significance as the results show that high-quality social and political dialogue must be premised on increasing the effectiveness of elementary school students’ news reading process. In the future, elementary school news literacy education should use various forms of hard news as educational materials and provide educational content dealing with problems with recommended news algorithms. In addition, educational activities to explore the types and negative influences of fake news should be prepared, and the types and methods of social and political dialogue that can foster critical news acceptance should be systematically sought.
