Abstract

This study explores the historical development and contem- porary expansion of “Jebiga”, a representative piece of japga, a Korean vocal genre rooted in the music of commoners. Focusing on the interplay between musical transformation and performance form, the paper examines how japga was successfully introduced to theatrical stages in early 20th-century Seoul and gained popularity among urban audiences. The analysis centers on musical and performative changes seen in four notable artists-Park Chunjae, Muk Gyewol, Lee Chunhee, and Lee Heemoon-highlighting both continuity and innovation. First, the tonal structure of “Jebiga” shows a bipartite modal system. The first half uses sol, la, do′, re′, mi′, reflecting the gyeongtori, while the latter half uses re, mi, sol, la, do′, reflecting the characteristics of sushimgatori. This consistent modal pattern across time suggests a stable musical core amid stylistic evolution. Second, compared to early 20th-century versions represented solely by Park Chunjae, more recent renditions since the genre’s designation as an Important Intangible Cultural Heritage exhibit increased use of repetitive and ornamented melodic phrases. These features reflect a trend toward emphasizing stylistic identity and intensifying the connection between melody and text. Third, in the early 1900s, performances often included dance and artistic skills to enhance popular appeal. After institution- alization, however, the genre adopted the seated format. In contrast, 21st-century performers like Lee Heemoon reintroduced visual and theatrical elements while preserving the core melody, effectively resonating with modern audiences. The paper argues that “Jebiga” has undergone both preservation and innovation. Earlier performances presented song, dance, and entertainment as distinct components, whereas current formats integrate these within a unified, japga-centered framework. “Jebiga”’s transformation reflects broader changes in the aesthetics and institutional context of Korean traditional music, illustrating how traditional music adapts to contemporary performance culture. Through this case study, the research contributes to broader discussions on tradition and change in musical transmission, offering insight into how historical genres sustain relevance through evolving presentation and audience engagement.
