Abstract

This study reinterprets "Absinthe," also known as the "Green Fairy" for its profound involvement in the lives and works of 19th-century European artists, through the lenses of art education and art therapy. By analyzing the creative acts of artists such as Édouard Manet, Vincent van Gogh, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec—who struggled with alcoholism and emotional instability—this research explores how their artistic activities functioned as a process of self-healing. The study applies common treatment factors (support, learning, and action factors) derived from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) as an analytical framework. The findings reveal that the artists' creative endeavors served as a psycho-therapeutic mechanism to strengthen resilience. This was achieved through the catharsis of negative emotions and emotional stability (support factors), the objectification of the inner self and enhancement of self-efficacy (learning factors), and the sublimation of impulses and restoration of self-esteem (action factors). These results suggest that art transcends being a mere medium for expressing pathological addic tion; rather, it is an integrated act of learning and therapy that promotes emotional regulation and self-understanding. Accordingly, this study proposes that art education can be expanded into the fields of addiction prevention and rehabilitation as an integrated therapeutic foundation for emo tional, cognitive, and behavioral recovery.
