Abstract

This study analyzes the Korean folktale The Tiger and the Dried Persimmon through the theoretical framework of Paul Ricoeur’s hermeneutics of narrative. Focusing on the threefold mimesis (Mimesis I–II–III), the paper interprets the story as a symbolic process through which primordial human anxiety is confronted, narrated, and ultimately healed. In Mimesis I, the study examines the prefigurative world of cultural codes and symbolic structures in which the tiger embodies nature’s overwhelming power and fear in traditional Korean society. Mimesis II explores how linguistic wit and narrative inversion subvert that fear, transforming it into humor and wisdom. Finally, Mimesis III illuminates the refiguration process in which the audience’s act of understanding converts the experience of fear into laughter, thereby achieving a narrative catharsis and healing. The analysis reveals that The Tiger and the Dried Persimmon is not merely a humorous tale but a symbolic narrative that dramatizes human effort to domesticate fear through imagination. By mediating between nature (the tiger) and culture (the persimmon), the folktale exposes the anthropological structure of human self-understanding and the cultural process of overcoming anxiety through storytelling. Ultimately, this study recontextualizes the folktale as a narrative of existential anxiety and self-understanding, demonstrating that the cycle of mimesis in Ricoeur’s theory embodies the healing power of narrative and the continuity of cultural memory.
