Abstract

This study reinterprets the classical Korean novel, Janghwa Hongryeonjeon, through the lens of Paul Ricœur’s theory of triple mimesis, focusing on the narrative of memory and the reconstruction of female identity. Whereas previous studies have emphasized filial piety and the reinforcement of patriarchal order, this study highlights the invocation of suppressed memory and the recovery of female subjectivity through narrative. Janghwa Hongryeonjeon structures the experiences of Janghwa and Hongryeon through death and their return as spirits, thus calling for the reconstruction of repressed memories and the reassessment of social recognition. Applying Ricœur’s mimesis framework, this study analyzes the interplay among the prefigured world (Mimesis I), the configured narrative (Mimesis II), and the refigured world (Mimesis III), elucidating how female subjects reconstruct their existence through memory, narrative, and action. By reframing Janghwa Hongryeonjeon not merely as a morality tale but as a politically charged narrative of memory and healing, this study offers a new perspective on issues of memory, subjectivity, and ethics inherent in classical narratives, suggesting new possibilities for the convergence of classical literature and contemporary memory studies.
