Abstract

The many studies on the Renaissance accompanied by occidental scholars are part of scientific efforts that belongs to the category of its europocentric interpretation. The core of this interpretation is that from the viewpoint of history the Renaissance is the ‘autochthonous cultural phenomenon of Europe’. According to this, overcoming a thousand years of Dark-Age, moving up through the Great Age of Discovery, the Europe succeeded the ancient Greek civilization, reached to the Modern Material Civilization. However, the Italian Peninsula of the Renaissance is situated geographically in the centre of cultural interchange and commercial activities of the Mediterranean during the Ancient times and the Middle Ages, and came into contact with the advanced civilization of the external world through the Levant. And Arab civilization, in fact, despite of the Crusade and a religious clash with the Christian-Europe, took a part of flow in the Mediterranean many civilizational elements of Eurasian Continent. And italian communes(Pisa, Venice, Genova etc.,) also played a role as a mediator between the European Continent and the Mediterranean. For this reason, ‘Via Francigena’, interconnected the northern part(Britain) and the western part(Iberian Peninsula) of Europe with the Levant through the Italian Peninsula(Rome). Meanwhile, Jerusalem situated in the area of Levant is non only the common place for the three religions and the barrier station to the islamic holy land(Mecca, Medina), but also the strategic point of the Mediterranean for the civilizational interchange between the Orient and the Occident.
