Abstract
This study examines how Tamura Ryuichi’s late poetry collection From the New World expresses the theme of “return” in the life of the aging poet approaching the twenty-first century. By comparing it with his earlier works, the paper explores how Tamura’s poetic vision evolved while preserving continuity with his youthful ideals. His ten collections from the 1990s already reflect a mature contemplation of life and time. Tamura’s method was a constant dialogue with his former self, representing not merely a postwar sensibility but a synthesis of diverse cultural layers before and after the war. The young poet’s transition into the “real world” persisted in old age, reappearing in a transformed yet resonant form. Through musical motifs in poems such as From the New World and Winter Night Rhapsody, Tamura envisioned not a simple return to the past but a spiritual return to existence within the primordial flow of time.
