Abstract
This paper examines Yokomitsu Riichi's Shinen focusing on the characters' psychology and behavior, as well as the novelty of its expressive style. Although the work is a romantic drama set among the leisure class, the characters act in a largely non-autonomous manner, driven by external factors rather than by their own will. These external factors include the influence of others' romantic feelings or ideas emerging from the unconscious. Unlike traditional novels, where protagonists' thoughts are presented in a self-centered way(e.g."I thought..."),the characters in Shinen are frequently depicted thinking,"I wonder what the other person is thinking..." This shift highlights a complex structure of self-awareness and mutual suspicion, distinguishing the work from conventional realist fiction (private novels, psychological novels) and establishing a new model of narrative. The characters in‐Shinen‐are consistently engaged in attempts to discern and question the thoughts of others. However, their identities are not fixed;rather, they fluctuate within interdependent relationships, leaving their sense of self fragile and unstable.Ulyimately,‐Shinen‐explores the existential anxiety inherent in human existence.
