「Nのうえで」の形式化をめぐる一考察‒名詞の性質と用法間の連続性に着目して‒

Abstract

This paper analyzes “N no+uede” and discusses the formalization process of semantic abstraction from a spatial location while classifying its semantic usage from a continuous perspective. “N no+uede” can be roughly divided into three meanings and usages: “space/position”, “field/direction” and “precondition”. It can be further subcategorized into “concrete space/position”, “abstract space/position”, “field”, “standard” “direction”, “prerequisite”, “antecedent situation” and “antecedent process”, based on the features “characteristics of prepositional nouns”, “characteristics of predicates”, “temporal relationship with subsequent events”, and “paraphrasability as 「V-ru/ta+uede」”. The semantic usage of “N no+uede” is deeply related to the lexical meaning and grammatical nature of preceding nouns, and continuity can be seen between the semantic usages. In the case of uede connected to a verb, the usages of the conjunctive particle can be divided into “V-ru+uede” and “V-ta+uede”. In contrast, the formalization of uede connected to nouns is observed to have both conjunctive particle properties and continuity with conjunctive usage, and the temporal relationships between the antecedent and the consequent are complex and cannot be simply stated.
