피터 싱어는 살생 문제에 자신의 공리주의를 적용하는 과정에서 단지 의식만 지닌 존재는 대체 가능하지만, 인격체는 대체 불가능하다고 주장한다. 하지만 이런 주장은 공리주의를 일관되게 살생 문제에 적용하면, 두 존재 모두 대체 가능하다는 반론에 직면한다. 싱어는 인격체의 대체 불가능성을 논증하기 위해 기존 선호를 만족하는 것과 새 선호를 만족하는 것을 구분한다. 그리고 새 선호를 만족하는 것을 선호의 차변 모델로 설명한다. 차변 모델에 따르면, 새로운 인격체를 만들어 그것의 욕구를 만족하는 것은 선호가 실현되면 기껏해야 모든 차변이 삭제될 뿐인 존재를 만드는 것이다. 이것을 통해 차변 모델은 인격체의 대체 가능성을 차단하지만, 모든 선호를 만족하는 것이 불가능하다는 점에서 출생을 부정하는 염세주의를 낳는다. 싱어는 차변 모델이 낳는 문제를 해결하기 위해 자신의 주장을 몇 차례 변경하기도 하고, 쾌락이라는 선호와 무관한 가치를 끌어들이기도 한다. 하지만 이는 선호 이론과 쾌락주의를 조화시켜야 하는 새로운 문제를 낳는다. 본 연구는 선호 실현과 만족감을 포함하는 넓은 선호 만족 개념을 통해 차변 모델의 염세주의적 경향을 극복할 수 있음을 논증하고, 인격체의 대체 불가능성을 논증하는 방안으로 두 수준 공리주의를 제시하고자 한다.
Abstract
Peter Singer, in applying his utilitarianism to the problem of killing, argues that while conscious beings are replaceable, persons are irreplaceable. However, this argument faces the counterargument that, if utilitarianism is consistently applied to the problem of killing, both are replaceable. To argue for the irreplaceability of persons, Singer distinguishes between satisfying existing preferences and satisfying new preferences through the creation of new ones. He explains the creation and satisfaction of new preferences through a debit model of preference. According to the debit model, creating a new person would, at best, result in a being whose debits are all deleted when its preferences are satisfied. While the debit model thus blocks the replaceability of persons, it also leads to a pessimistic view that denies birth, as it is impossible to satisfy all preferences. To address the problems posed by the debit model, Singer repeatedly revises his argument, even incorporating pleasure, a value unrelated to preferences. However, this raises a new problem: reconciling preference theory with hedonism. This study argues that the pessimistic tendencies of the debit model can be overcome through a broader concept of preference satisfaction, encompassing both preference fulfillment and satisfaction. Furthermore, it proposes two-level utilitarianism as a way to demonstrate the irreplaceability of persons.
