Abstract
This paper examines W. A. P. Martin (1827–1916, Chinese name: 丁韪良)’s Cheondo Sowon (天道溯原, Evidence of Christianity) from a Confucian perspective. The main body of the paper is organized into two chapters. Chapter 2 explores the structure and content of Cheondo Sowon. Comprising three volumes, the work focuses on the explanation of God in the first volume, on the Bible (particularly Jesus Christ and Christianity) in the second volume, and on core Christian doctrines—including original sin, redemption (justification), the Holy Spirit, faith, sanctification, prayer, and the sacraments—in the third volume. Considering the systematic completeness and the depth of its content, Cheondo Sowon is recognized as one of the most outstanding Christian apologetic works of the nineteenth century. This chapter also examines how differences between Catholicism and Protestantism, as well as the historical context of the late Ming and late Qing periods, are reflected in the distinctions between Tianzhu Shiyi (天主實義) and Cheondo Sowon. Chapter 3 focuses on a comparative study of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit in Cheondo Sowon and Wang Yangming’s theory of innate knowledge (liangzhi). Martin illustrates the process of sanctification through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, which shows a resemblance to Wang Yangming’s notion of moral self-cultivation (chiyangzhi), wherein one follows the commands of innate knowledge. Martin asserts that following the guidance of the Holy Spirit is the only way to overcome sin and achieve salvation; similarly, Wang Yangming maintains that adherence to the commands of innate knowledge is the true path of cultivating virtue.
