Abstract
Plato’s concept of ‘the One’ is often interpreted either as his attempt to define an object of inquiry as ‘one’ or as an expression of the unity inherent in the Idea, which serves as the model for all particulars. Alternatively, it is understood as the ‘Idea of the Good’ in Plato’s Republic, which is presented as the unconditioned principle (archē anypothetos) of all Ideas—namely, ‘the One beyond Being,’ positioned at the highest level of Platonic metaphysics. This paper demonstrates that both perspectives on Plato’s ‘One’ inherently involve the ‘problem of the One and the Many’ concerning the Ideas. By comparing and analyzing this problem with the first and second hypotheses in the latter part of Plato’s Parmenides, this study seeks to identify the underlying cause of the ‘One and Many’ issue. In the course of this analysis, this paper reveals that Plato’s ‘problem of the One and the Many’ is not merely a metaphysical issue within his philosophy but rather a fundamental question concerning our cognition or reasoning about a transcendent reality beyond human comprehension.
