Abstract

The dialogue Parmenides consists of two parts, the first part deals with the criticism of the Theory of Forms, and the second part deals with a dialectical investigation of ‘one’ as practice. This study explores the meaning of the criticism of the Theory of Forms in the first part, based on the analysis of the ‘Third Man Argument’ and prepares an interpretive framework for the dialectic practice of the second part. The ‘Third Man Argument’ begins with Parmenides’ definition of the Idea that there is one equal Idea, or Largeness, corresponding to large things. Parmenides, however, intermingles large things and Largeness through ‘seeing with the soul’ to create a new Idea, and from this ability of the soul Idea of Largeness can be infinitely repeated. In this way Parmenides shows that Idea is not one but infinite in number. But Socrates defines these infinite Ideas as ‘thought’, in order to escape from the infinite regress problem. But this objection of Socrates is directly refuted by Parmenides showing that the ‘thought’ is identical with Idea. Therefore the ‘Third Man Argument’ remains still as an unsolved Aporia. This study defines the cause of the infinite regress of the ‘Third Man Argument’ as the ‘seeing with the soul’ and compares it with the concept of the soul that Plato explains in the dialogue Politeia. In addition, this study analyzes the association between Idea and ‘thought’ presented by Socrates to solve the infinite regress problem. As a result, this study reveals that the Aporia of the ‘Third Man Argument’ is due to indiscrimination of thought and Idea and asserts that the interpretation of the second part must be started from this standpoint.
