Abstract
Many scholars interpret the Parmenides in terms of ‘metaphysics’ or ‘logic’. However, interpreting the entire dialogue with only one of the two terms gives greater difficulties. For the Parmenides shows both ‘metaphysics’ and ‘logic’. Therefore, this paper explores how ‘metaphysics’ and ‘logic’ are related in the Parmenides rather than whether the Parmenides presents ‘metaphysics’ or ‘logic’, and shows a solution of the heterogeneity in the content in the first Part and the second Part of the Parmenides. Thus, this paper reveals the meaning of <One-One> of the first hypothesis and of <Many-One> of the second hypothesis on the point of view of the theory of Forms by analyzing the first hypothesis and the second hypothesis including the <Moment> argument in the second part of the Parmenides, and shows necessity of Idea and limitation of human thought about Idea through this meaning. In this way this paper will give a clearer understanding of Plato’s theory of Forms. As a result, the Parmenides shows the limitations that human thought necessarily faces when the metaphysical basis (Idea) is explored. The first Part shows aporia of the conceptualization of Idea which arises when the human thought attempts to define Idea and the second Part shows that the aporia is caused by the imperfection of the human thought exploring Idea. In this way, the second Part may be the solution of the first Part in that the second Part shows the cause for the aporia of the first Part, but it should be called a ‘practice’ in that Idea is not finally defined in the second Part.
