Abstract
Amid the rise of authoritarianism all over the globe in recent years, authoritarian attitudes from below that give support to authoritarian leaders draw scholarly attentions. South Korea as well has recently held the 20th presidential election where the two leading candidates, Yoon and Lee, are marked as their authoritarian leadership styles. The present survey analyses show that authoritarian attitudes among South Koreans are quite pervasive from comparative perspectives, especially for those in males, younger generations, conservatives and partisans for People Power Party. It is also found that authoritarian attitudes are driven by voters’ negative evaluations of economic situations and the government’s COVID-19 responses. Also, authoritarian attitudes are found to have an independent and significant role in increasing the likelihood of voting for Yoon over Lee. These results suggest that South Koreans’ authoritarian attitudes are strongly related to right conservatism and call for a close attention as they are likely to cause the crisis of their democratic system.
