현재의 힌두교는 19세기 힌두교 개혁 운동 이후의 것이라고 볼 수 있다. 힌두교 개혁 운동이 일어날 당시 인도의 종교는 이슬람 세력의 오랜 지배 이후 다시 기독교 세력의 영향을 받고 있는 상황이었다. 유일신 사상을 갖는 두 종교의 영향력 아래서 힌두교는 문화적 자긍심 및 민족의 정체성 회복을 위해 대중적인 지지를 받는 종교로 거듭날 필요가 있었다. 본 논문은 이 과정에서 박띠즘이 어떤 역할을 했는지 살펴보았다. 첫째 박띠즘은 기존 힌두교에서 비롯된 구습을 타파하고 빈곤자와 소외 계층을 포섭함으로써 사회 통합의 도구 역할을 하였다. 둘째 배움 없이도 누구나 쉽게 접근할 수 있었기 때문에 교세 확장에 용이했고 이는 힌두교의 세계화 가능성까지도 엿볼 수 있게 했다. 셋째 사상적으로 종교절충주의 혹은 탈종파주의의 배경이 되었기 때문에 종교적 배타성을 극복하고 다종교의 공존을 위한 대안이 될 수 있었다. 넷째 뿌라나 등 신화 문학을 통해 사랑스럽고 매력적인 신의 이미지를 얼마든지 양산할 수 있었고 이는 힌두교의 대중적인 인기에 큰 역할을 하게 되었다. 즉 힌두교의 종교적 변천에서 보자면 박띠는 비교적 쉬운 신행 방법으로 브라마니즘의 사제주의 흐름에서 탈피하는 전환점을 마련하였고, 또 이슬람, 기독교와 같은 이민족 종교와의 관계에서 신앙적 접합점이 되어 주었다. 그리고 인도가 현대 사회로 발전하는 과정에서 새로운 인도 사회와 전통적인 힌두교 간의 완충제 역할을 하였다.
Abstract
Today's Hinduism is resulted by the Hindu Reformation movement in the 19th century. At the time of the Hindu reformation movement, religion in India was under the influence of Christianity after a long period of domination by Islam. Under the influence of two monotheistic religions, Hinduism needed to be reborn as a religion with popular support in order to restore cultural pride and national identity. This paper examines the four roles of Bhaktism as follows. First, Bhaktism played a role in breaking the old customs derived from the existing Hinduism and embracing the poor and marginalized. Second, it was easy to expand religious influence because anyone could easily access it without learning. Third, in ideology, because of being the background of religious eclecticism or post-sectarianism, it was possible to overcome religious exclusivity. Fourth, it was possible to mass-produce the image of a lovely and attractive god through mythology, such as Purana, which played a big role in its popularity. In other words, in terms of the religious transition of Hinduism, Bhakti provided a turning point to break away from the priesthood of Brahmanism as a relatively easy new method, and also served as a religious junction in relations with other ethnic religions such as Islam and Christianity. And it served as a buffer between the new Indian society and traditional Hinduism in the process of India's development into a modern society.
