Abstract
Nowhere is the difficulty of getting reliable historical evidence so extreme as in the case of Indian Philosophy. In Hinduism, time is not only anādi (beginning-less) and nitya(eternal), but also māyā (illusory) in its essence. Therefore, Indian people have been quite indifferent to recording the exact dates of something in worldly life. Indian Philosophy has long history, but it is always difficult for the historians to ascertain the period for the development of a particular philosophy in ancient India. In this paper, I want to examine the influx of non-Aryan factors in the formation of the Vedas, the oldest literature of Indian Philosophy. Here, the term ‘Aryan’ does not mean a family of peoples, but peoples who speak Aryan languages. In fact, we do not know precisely who the Aryans were, and where they came from. The text of the Veda which we possess has come to us from the period of intellectual activity when the Āryans found their way into India from their original home. They brought with them certain notions and beliefs which were developed and continued on the Indian soil. A long interval must have elapsed between the composition and the compilation of the hymns, and in this period several non-Aryan factors came into the Vedas. The Dravidians were the most notable among the forerunners of the Āryans, and brought with them to India the elements of a comparatively advanced civilization. The factors of Dravidian thought had a powerful influence on the formation of the Aryan Vedas. In a sense, history of Indian philosophy can be regarded as a dialectical development between the Aryan factors and those of the Dravidians. In order to enquire into the influx of non-Aryan factors in the formation of the Vedas, I dealt with four subjects; 1) Indus civilization and Rig-veda, 2) Rig-Veda and Avesta, 3) the non-Ayan factors in Atharva-veda, and 4) karma, saṃsāra, yoga and mokṣa in Upaniṣads.
