Abstract

Though a few of Sanskrit scholars already noted that the tragedy or the tragic figures in Greek or Western sense are very rare from the Sanskrit narrative literature, the life of Karṇa described in Sanskrit Mahābhāta will be an exception of such a destitute. I propose in this paper that our understanding on the textual strategy for shaping Karṇa’s tragic aspects will be more enriched when we approach it with a set of literary apparatus like liminality(antasthatva), as being shown in Karṇa’s unstable social status, and trickery(māyā) and curses(śāpa) that are drawn to Karṇa by the gods and braḥmans respectively several times. These motifs are small but important, and well deserve to be considered not only because the play of that motifs impel Karṇa closely to fatal destiny with death in narrative of Mahābhāta, but because the very way of narrative composition in Sanskrit epics or other texts comes through often with that apparatus. The unstable status of his social identity as sūta’s son and as kṣatriya that driven Karṇa into the situations being cursed by brahmins to whom he lied, the cursed that has been petrified as vularized karmic sequence, and the trickery tactics made by Indra or other gods supply with one kind of exemplar in which we can figure out the way the tragic figure or the tragedy come to be meaningful in Indian narrative ways.
