Abstract
This study empirically analyzes the impact of India’s participation in global value chains (GVCs) on its exports from 2007 to 2023, using the Asian Development Bank’s Multi-Regional Input-Output (ADB-MRIO) data. The analysis compares India with China, Korea, and Vietnam in terms of total exports, domestic value-added (DVA), foreign value-added (FVA), and GVC forward and backward participation. In addition, a panel analysis using the Poisson Pseudo Maximum Likelihood (PPML) model was conducted for 63 trading partner countries, along with a bilateral trade analysis between India and Korea. The results show that India’s total exports are about one-fourth the size of China’s, but its domestic value-added share—around 80%—is similar to China’s. India’s backward GVC participation increased sharply after 2010, surpassing forward participation in 2013, but both indices declined after 2017. Empirical findings indicate that India’s GVC forward and backward participation positively affect exports overall and across different technology levels, with significant effects also observed in India–Korea bilateral trade. The study concludes that India’s GVC participation has gradually weakened in recent years and emphasizes the need to deepen GVC integration. Policy implications include strengthening India–Korea trade relations through the improvement of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and the reduction of trade barriers.
