현대국어의 /의/는 이중모음인가? －/의/의 음향적·지각적 특성에 대한 검토－

본 연구에서는 음향적ㆍ지각적 분석을 통하여 현대국어의 이중모음 체계에서 상향 혹은 하향 이중모음으로 간주되고 있는 ‘의’를 단모음의 연쇄 /ɨi/로 분석할 수 있는 가능성을 검토하였다. 음성학적으로 ‘의’는 상향 이중모음 [ɰi]에 가깝게 발음되지만 다른 이중모음보다 ‘핵모음에 대한 활음의 비율’(G/V)이 높은 편이며 내재적 지속시간이 짧은 /ɨ/와 /i/로 구성되었음에도 불구하고 다른 이중모음보다 지속시간이 길다. 이러한 음향적 특성에 의하면 ‘의’가 ‘활음+모음’이 아니라 ‘모음+모음’으로 구성되었다는 가설을 세울 수 있다. 또한 언어보편적인 이중모음 체계의 지각적 특성이나 활음 탈락을 고려한다면 ‘의’를 /ɨi/로 분석하는 것이 바람직하다. ‘의’를 상향 이중모음 /ɰi/로 본다면 활음 /ɰ/가 오직 핵모음 /i/하고만 결합되는 까닭을 설명해야 하는데 두 조음점의 거리가 멀수록 지각에 유리하고 안정적인 이중모음의 성격을 고려한다면 이에 대한 설명은 쉽지 않다.
Abstract
This paper introduces an alternative analysis of Korean diphthong /ɰi/. I propose [ɰi] in Korean is not ‘glide+vowel’ but ‘vowel+vowel’ based on acoustic and perceptual features of [ɰi]. The phonetic realization of /ɨi/ is close to diphthong [ɰi] which includes glide /ɰ/. However the percentage of gilde duration from /ɰi/ is bigger than that of gilde duration from other diphthongs. And the whole duration of /ɰi/ is longer than the duration of other diphthongs. These acoustic features reveal that [ɰi] is derived from ‘vowel+vowel’ /ɨi/. Besides acoustic features we cannot help regarding [ɰi] as ‘vowel+vowel’ according to the perceptual features of Korean diphthong system. If we adhere to regard [ɰi] as ‘glide+vowel’, we shall fail to explain why glide /ɰ/ combines with the only vowel /i/. The longer distance between two places of articulation of glide and vowel is, the more stable from the glide deletion diphthong is. Nevertheless /ɰa/ or /ɰo/ are absolute ill-formed in Korean diphthong system.
