초록

This study reexamines the Korean diphthong system and revisits the phonological status of glides. While traditional analyses treat diphthongs as combinations of glides and vowels, recent approaches have inconsistently granted phonemic status to glides. In response, this study proposes that glides are phonetic variants of high vowels rather than independent phonemes. Drawing on cross-linguistic, historical, and phonological evidence, it argues that all Korean diphthongs can be derived from vowel sequences, providing a more coherent account of glide-related processes and preserving the phonemic transparency of Hangul. This reinterpretation not only resolves theoretical ambiguities in Korean phonology but also contributes to broader discussions on the phonetics–phonology interface. The exploration of potential diphthongs beyond the eleven analyzed in this study(e.g., ai, au, oi, etc.) is left for future investigation.
