Abstract
A diphthong is a sequence of two vowels that is in a syllable phonetically, and it is a problem of phonological level that we analyze a diphthong in a sequence of glide-vowel(or vowel-glide). Because a diphthong is a sequence of two vowel phonetically, we may pronounce a diphthong to a continuum of two vowels, or we may pronounce a continuum of two vowels to a diphthong. The former becomes two syllables, the latter becomes one syllable. If a segment is deleted in a diphthong, we have regarded generally that a glide is deleted. But I investigated that not glide but vowel in diphthong is also able to be deleted. In phonetical level, Glide is also a vowel, though is glide in phonological level. So, if a vowel in diphthong is deleted, a remaining glide is restored from vowel. I proved this assertion through the examples of ‘i-sa’ derived from ‘ɨy-sa’ and ‘ku-sin’ derived from ‘kwi-sin’. In the example of ‘ku-sin’, it is able to be interpreted as a result of diachronic change that glide ‘y’ was deleted from not ‘kwi-sin’ but ‘kuy-sin’. If that is true, ‘ku-sin’ is able to be regarded as the result of glide deletion in diphthong. But I proved ‘ku-sin’ was derived from ‘kwi-sin’ synchronically as the existence of ‘i-sa’ derived from ‘ɨy-sa’. Because the letter ‘ㅢ’ is always ‘ɨy’ from middle Korean to now, so ‘i-sa’ derived from ‘ɨy-sa’ is no alternative but to be synchronical derivation. In like ‘i-sa’, ‘ku-sin’ is also a synchronical derivation derived from ‘kwi-sin’. After deleted ‘ɨ’ in ‘ɨy’, the remaining glide ‘y’ is realized to ‘i’ as restoring of its original sonority. The ‘wi → u’ is also undergone the same process as ‘ɨy → i’. That is, after ‘i’ is deleted, the remaining ‘w’ is realized to ‘u’ as restoring of its original sonority.
