Barleys (黍) and millets (稷) were very important crops in the ancient times of China. The number of the letters of Barley (黍) and millet (稷) recorded in Heoshin’s Seolmun Haeja are 22 in total. This study examines through three aspects of Chinese characters’ shape, implication and culture. Through the study, the crops with similar properties are discerned, and whether their names and actual details match is checked. Through the implications of character shapes and letters, this study aims to define the disputed parts due to different interpretations with personal opinion.
Abstract
Barleys (黍) and Millets (稷) were very important crops in the ancient times of China. The number of the letters of Barley (黍) and millet (稷) recorded in Heoshin’s Seolmun Haeja are 22 in total.
