Abstract

This study examines how the learners of the Japanese language manage to answer polar questions in naturally occurred conversation. In the standard assumption about answers to polar questions, the speaker (the answerer) first states the polarity of his/her answer by using a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ word. After stating the polarity, then the speaker continues to provide additional information if needed. However, in Japanese learners’ naturally occurred conversation, this is not always the case. In actual conversation, nearly half of the answers for polar questions do not contain either a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ word. With the examination of the naturally occurred conversational data the current study found that the learners of Japanese use multiple different strategies to answer polar questions depending on contextual differences. The study then argues that answering polar question is not a simple task of responding but it has very complex linguistic structures.
