Abstract

This paper aimed to review the extent to which the U.S. dollar, euro and yuan are preferred as international reserve currencies through a survey of business people in China, Japan and Korea, the three major countries in Northeast Asia. Korea still prefers only the U.S. dollar as an international reserve currency even when it is unstable. This can be interpreted to mean that trust in the U.S. dollar is much greater than trust in the euro or the yuan. After the US financial crisis in 2008, the value of the U.S. dollar fell sharply compared to other major currencies, but it rose against the Korean won. Japan still prefers it as an international reserve currency even when the value of the U.S. dollar, euro, and yuan is unstable. This can be attributed to the lack of foreign exchange to replace the U.S. dollar, euro, and yuan. China just prefers any currency as an international reserve currency when it is stable. This seems to reflect China’s experience of suffering significant losses due to depreciation of the U.S. dollar or euro after the U.S. financial in 2008 crisis and the European financial crisis in 2011.
