Abstract

This study judged that Haruki Murakami’s works are circulated in the world market because they are consumed as glocal cultural contents and examined the backgrounds and aspects. First, for example, his work, 1Q84, the heroine, Aomame is described as a carnivorous woman and combat woman who makes a contract killing and seek sexual pleasure, and this attempt might be based on his effort as a writer who tried to model new characters. Second, the “Cool Japan” strategy starting from the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry was planed to actively launch Japanese sub-cultures’ pioneering of overseas markets; however, such a content strategy did not produce actual results much. And yet, Haruki Murakami’s works rather contribute to letting the world know Japanese literature and culture, and in that sense, they can be said to be strategic cultural products. Third, while his early works secured globality by intentionally removing Japanese style through obscuring the countries in which they were set, most of the works published after 2000, instead, raised the issues of love, violence, religion, and sexual minorities as themes and pursued the values universal to mankind, conclusionally emphasizing family love by setting Japan as the background and Japanese people as characters. Lastly, the aspect of consumption of them as glocal cultural contents can be seen as the filming and dramatization of his works. Films produced by the directors of other countries as well as Japanese ones have been distributed and screened, and these examples support the fact that Haruki’s works secure success as a content business, too.
