Abstract

In foreign language education, it is effective to improve skills by incorporating collaborative activities into classes, in which students work with native speakers, on research, discussion, and so on. In this paper, we report on how we implemented collaborative activities in the Japanese composition class, which Korean students worked together with native Japanese speakers. In order to clarify the effects of online- collaborative classes, we examined the results of students’ essays and writing proficiency, when the same lesson is carried out, in online-collaborative class using a remote conference system, and only through in-class activities. We use the writing proficiency analysis tool ‘jWriter’ to compare the evaluation values of essays created in each group and essays written individually. This confirmed that the educational effects of online- collaborative activities in writing classes. For students who engaged in online-collaborative activities with Japanese students in Japan, there was a noticeable improvement for evaluations of group compositions after the sessions in which Japanese students joined. Furthermore, more than half of the students of the class improved in evaluation of their personal writing proficiency. On the other hand, when the activity was limited to interacting with a small number of Japanese students in the class, the groups’ writing evaluation results did not improve. Additionally, there were relatively few students who improved their evaluation of their individual writing proficiency. Furthermore, the students who experienced online-collaborative classes revealed that they were more satisfied with the knowledge and skills they gained from the exchange activities.
