상상력의 철학적 근거 - 흄의 상상력 이론을 중심으로

‘인문학적 소양 함양’에 대한 교육적 중요성을 지적하며 지금까지 다각적인 노력을 기울여왔지만, 그 지향점과 이론적 토대에 대한 정립이 제대로 이루어지지 못한 것이 현실이다. 이러한 사실은 인문학이 환경의 변화에 따라 제기능을 발휘하지 못하고 있다는 비판이자 인문학이 갖는 고유한 기능을 회복하기 위한 이론적 토대가 절실히 요구된다는 것을 의미하는 것이기도 하다. 최근 ‘상상력(imagination)’을 둘러싼 문제가 인문학, 특히 철학에서 또 다시 주된 화두로 등장하고 있는 것을 보면 인문학 고유의 방법론을 상상력에서 타진하고 있거나 인문학적 사유 지평의 확장이라는 측면과 무관하지 않을 것이다. 이 글의 목표 또한 상상력을 핵심적인 철학적 주제들 가운데 하나로 여기고 상상력에 대한 올바른 이해야말로 많은 다른 철학적인 난제를 해결할 수 있다고 여긴 인물인 흄(D. Hume)의 철학에 대해 살펴 보고, 인문학적 사유지평의 확장이라는 측면에서 상상력의 기여 가능성을 타진하는데 있다. 흄에게 있어 인상들 간의 단절을 넘어 동일성을 확보할 수 있는 것은 오직 상상력을 통해 가능하다. 또한 지각에 단순히 주어진 것들을 넘어 원인과 결과간에 필연적 연관성이 있다는 믿음, 구체적인 관념들을 넘어 그 관념들을 묶어 준다고 생각되는 자아(인격)라고 불리는 동일한 어떤 실체가 있다는 믿음 등은 모두 상상력의 작용으로 가능한 것들이다.
Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to find out philosophical ground about 'imagination'. D. Hume thought of an imagination as one of philosophical subjects that is core, and regarded the proper understanding about imagination as to solve the difficult philosophical problem. The investigation about fact that imagination occupies what kind of location and play what kind of the role consequently from D. Hume philosophy is to mean work. To D. Hume, what be able to secure an identity over the discontinuation of each impressions is possible through only imagination. Also belief that is necessary connection between cause and effect over the fact that simply comes to give to a perception is possible through only imagination. And belief that is what kind of identical entity called the self (personality) which tie those idea over the concrete ideas is to be possible in action of all imagination. Ultimately, D. Hume's philosophy expect to contribute in expansion of humanitic thinking.
