이 글의 목적은 근대적 학문체계의 이념적 토대를 준비했던 독일 낭만주의 시대의 인문주의를 되돌아보면서 다음과 같은 몇 가지 사항을 검토하는 데 있다. 먼저 인문적 상상력의 기본적 요소들은 무엇이고, 이 요소들은 어떤 개념적 내용을 지니는가? 다른 한편 인문적 상상력(인문학)과 사회적 상상력(사회과학)이 관계하는 고전적인 방식은 무엇인가? 마지막으로 새로운 국가 개념(혹은 민족의 문화적 정체성)의 창조를 인문학의 주요 과제로 제기했던 이 시대의 문제설정 방식은 오늘날에도 여전히 유효할 수 있는가? 특히 세계화가 가속화되고 있는 최근의 역사적 현실에 대하여 과거의 인문학이 지녔던 역사적 상상력은 어떤 의미를 지닐 수 있는가? 첫 번째 물음을 위해 논의될 가장 중요한 주제는 이 시대의 인문주의를 향도하는 교양(Bildung)의 이념에 있을 것이고, 두 번째 물음을 위해서는 미적 국가 이념을 중심으로 한 낭만주의와 헤겔 사이의 대결이 검토될 것이며, 세 번째 물음을 위해서는 헤겔의 역사철학이 암시하는 인문적 세계화의 길이 성찰의 대상이 될 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to discuss three questions related to the humanistic movement which has arisen in the period of German Romanticism. The three questions are as follows. First, what could be the basic and constitutive elements of the classical humanistic thinking, and how can we determine their conceptual contents? Second, what would be the original relation established in this epoch between humanistic imagination (humanities) and social imagination (social sciences)? Third, if one of the main tasks assigned to the humanistic authors in this period lies in creating a cultural identity of nation, how can this kind of problematic still have a validity in our age? How can their historical imagination have a meaningful message to the current historical situation which is mainly determined by the so-called globalization?The most important theme to be discussed for the first question will consist in the idea of culture(Bildung) which dominates the humanistic thinking in this age. To answer to the second question, I will examine the controversy between Romanticism and Hegel over the idea of aesthetic State. To approach the final question, I will focus on the possibility of humanistic globalization, which is implied in the Hegelian concept of “World-history.”
