본 논문은 Hume과 Kant의 상상력 개념을 비교하면서 그 차이점 보다는 공통점을 조사하려 하고 있다. 그 결과 다음과 같은 공통점 내지 유사점이 있음을 주장하고 있다. 첫째로 우리의 인식에 있어서 상상이 필수적인 역할을 수행하고 있다는 것을 Hume과 Kant가 공통적으로 인정하고 있다는 점이다. 둘째로 상상력의 구분과 관련하여 Hume에 있어서 상상의 반복적 능력과 자유로운 상상력의 구분이 Kant에 있어서 재생적 상상력과 생산적 상상력의 구분과 유사함을 발견할 수 있다. 셋째로 Hume과 Kant 두 사람은 그 정도는 다를지라도 상상을 오성작용을 위한 기초로서 이해했다는 점이다. 넷째로 Hume에 있어서 상상력에 의한 자연적 판단과 인위적 판단의 구별은 Kant에 있어서 상상력에 의한 미감적 판단의 자유롭고 주관적인 인식능력의 활성화와 상상력에 의해 판단의 간접성과 제한성을 보완하는 오성적 판단의 구분과 상당한 정도로 유사하다는 것이다. 다섯째로 감성론자로서의 Hume이 오성의 역할을 도외시하지 않은 것과 마찬가지로, 이성론자로서의 Kant 또한 감성의 중요성을 깊이 인식하였다는 점이다. Hume과 Kant 사이의 이러한 공통점들은 Kant가 Hume의 이론적 기초에 많이 의존하면서 이를 선험적 차원에까지 확장시키려 했음을 우리에게 보여준다. 그리고 이는 명백히 Kant가 왜 Hume의 참된 후계자로 불리어지는지를 설명해주고 있다. 그러나 Hume이 얼마나 기초를 잘 구축했는지 그리고 Kant가 Hume의 기초로부터 선험적 영역에로의 확장에 있어서 얼마나 성공적이었는지를 조사하는 것은 앞으로도 계속 우리의 긴요한 연구과제가 될 것이다.
Abstract
This paper aims to examine and compare the concept of imagination in David Hume and Immanuel Kant, and to find out more the common features than the difference in their theories. The leading features found through my research as follows. Firstly, Hume and Kant acknowledge in common that the imagination plays the essential role in our cognition. Secondly, Hume's classification of the repetitive faculty of imagination and the free imagination is similar to Kant's classification of the re-productive imagination and the productive imagination. Thirdly, Hume and Kant conceive the imagination as the foundation of u andstanding although different to the extents. Fourthly, Hume's distinction of the natural jural jur and artificial jural jur in the imagination is consiandably similar to Kant's distinction of the free and subjective, cognition faculty of aesthetic judgement and the understanding judgement supplementing the indirectness and limitation of imaginative judgement. Finally, Kant, the rationalist recognizes also the importance of the sensibility as Hume, the sentimentalist does not ignore the role of understanding. These common features of Hume and Kant show us that Kant depend much upon Hume's theoretical foundation and extend it up to the transcendental dimension. And this vividly explains why Kant was called the true successor of Hume. But that will be our requisite task to examine continually how well Hume consolidated the foundation and how much Kant was successful in extension to the trascendental sphere from Hume's foundation.
