이 논문은 인종주의란 무엇인가 그리고 이를 도덕적으로 어떻게 평가할 것인가라는 물음에 대해 다룬다. 먼저 나는 콰미 아피아가 전개한 인종주의에 대한 인지주의적 입장에 대해 소개하고 이것이 갖는 문제점에 대해서 지적한다. 다음으로는 호르헤 가르시아를 빌어 인종주의에 대한 비인지주의적 입장을 소개하면서 이 입장 역시 문제적임을 보일 것이다. 이에 대한 대안으로 나는 로렌스 블룸의 논의를 수정하여 인종주의에 대한 다원론적 설명의 유용성을 옹호하면서, 무엇이 인종주의적인지를 규정하기 위해서는 인종에 관련된 사회규범에 의거해야 한다고 주장한다. 이처럼 사회규범에 근거하여 수정된 다원론적 이해에 따르면, 우리는 인종주의를 단일한 존재자로 환원할 수 없으며, 이는 개인, 제도, 사회구조 등 다양한 존재자에서 체현될 수 있다. 또한 이러한 다원주의는 인종적 부정의, 인종차별, 인종적 불편함 등 여러 가지 수준의 인종기반적 그릇됨이 있음을 받아들인다. 위 논의를 구체화하기 위해서 나는 최근 의정부고의 졸업사진 중 하나로 실린 관짝소년단의 경우를 하나의 사례 연구로서 활용할 것이다.
Abstract
This article argues for a pluralistic understanding concerning what the concept of racism is and how we are to morally evaluate it. I first introduce Kwami Appiah’s cognitive view of racism and show its problems. I then present a voluntarist view of racism by Jorge Garcia and show that it is also problematic. As an alternative, I defend a pluralistic explanation of racism by revising Lawrence Blum’s view and connecting it to social norms. According to him, we cannot reduce racism to a singular entity and racism can be manifest in various entities such as individuals, institutions, and social structures. The pluralistic view can also accommodate various race-based wrongness such as racial injustice, racial discrimination, and racial discomfort. Given this, we need to acknowledge that there are various ways and degrees of race-based wrongness. I make my case by utilizing a case of Uijeongbu High students’s blackface parody.
