이 글은 헤겔 연구(특히 우리사회의 헤겔 연구)에서 불모지나 다름없는 그의 인종이론의 성격이 무엇인지를 해명하는 것을 목적으로 삼는다. 특히 그의 인종이론을 좀 더 상세하게 설명하면서 그것이 과연 인종주의를 옹호하는 이론인지를 검토한다. 아울러 설령 헤겔의 인종이론이 인종주의적 요소를 지니고 있음이 부인될 수 없음에도 불구하고, 인종주의는 그의 정신철학의 기본적 원리와 양립할 수 없는 것으로 간주되어야 한다는 주장을 비판적으로 검토한다. 달리 말하자면 이 글에서 필자는 헤겔의 인종주의가 결코 우연적이고 부수적인 요인에 지나지 않는 것으로 치부하기 힘들다는 점을 좀 더 명료하게 해볼 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to expound upon Hegel’s theory of race, which has been left largely unexplored (especially in South Korea). In particular, the study will delve into Hegel’s theory of race to determine whether it supports racism. Furthermore, the study will critically review the assertion that though it may be difficult to deny that Hegel’s theory of race carries elements of racism, the underlying tenets of his thought and racism are mutually exclusive. In words, the author will elaborate upon why it is difficult to trivialize Hegel’s racism as an unnecessary and ancillary byproduct.
