본고는 화이트헤드의 철학에서 시간이 지니는 다양한 의미들(특히 물리적 시간과 획기적 시간)이 연장적 연속체라는 개념과의 관계 속에서 이해될 수 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 화이트헤드의 대표적인 시간에 관한 학설인 시간의 획기성에 따르면, 생성의 시간(획기적 시간)은 연장적 연속체를 전제하면서도 그로부터 독립적인 시간이다. 그러한 생성의 시간은 물리적인 시간이 아니라 정신적인 시간이다. 즉 정신적 극에서 생겨나는 주체적 지향(목적인)의 일자(통일)성 때문에 불가분적이고 비연장적인 내적 시간인 것이다. 이에 비해, 물리적 시간은 현실적 존재의 물리적 극에서 산출되며 현실적 존재의 만족과 함께 연장적 연속체 속에서 생겨나는 시간으로서 분할 가능성을 특징으로 한다. 결국 연장적 연속체는 그것 안에서 현실 세계의 객체화를 규정함으로써 물리적 시간을 낳을 뿐만 아니라, 현실적 계기들의 생성에 대해서는 그러한 과정(합생의 과정)을 제한함으로써 생성의 시간(획기적 시간)을 낳는다고 말할 수 있다.
Abstract
This paper intends to reveal that the various meanings of time in Whitehead's philosophy (especially physical time and epochal time) can be understood with respect to the notion of an extensive continuum. According to Whitehead's representative doctrine of time, the epochal time presupposes an extensive continuum but is independent of it. The time of such creation is not physical time, but mental time. In other words, it is an indivisible and non-extended inner time because of the incurable unity of the subjective aim that arises from the mental pole. In contrast, physical time is characterized by divisibility as time that is produced in the physical pole of actual occasion and arises in an extensive continuum with the satisfaction of the actual occasion. After all, it can be said that the extensive continuum not only produces physical time by determining the objectification of the actual world within it, but also produces time of becoming (epochal time) by limiting such a process (the process of Concrescence) with respect to the becoming of acual occasions.
