본고에서는 윤석열 대통령의 대중국 담화를 텍스트 마이닝과 비판적 담론분석(CDA)을 결합해 분석함으로써, 단순한 친중·반중 구도를 넘어선, 인식 구조를 규명하는 데 목적을 두었다. 분석 결과, 윤 대통령의 담화는 표면적으로는 ‘협력–평화’를 강조하면서도 그 내층에서는 ‘규범–안보’라는 조건을 병행하는 전략적 중층성을 드러냈다. 특히 여기서 말하는 ‘협력’은 단순한 우호적 협력이 아니라, 자유·인권·법치라는 보편적 가치, 북한 문제, 인도–태평양 질서를 매개로 한 조건부 협력이자 동시에 우회적 견제 전략으로 기능한다. 이러한 특징은 한국 외교가 미·중 경쟁이라는 구조적 제약 속에서 헤징 전략을 규범적 요소와 접목시켜 변형하는 동시에, 중견국 외교론이 강조하는 자율성과 정체성을 재구성하려는 시도로 해석된다. 나아가 본 연구는 한국 외교를 단순히 대중국 구도로 환원하기보다, 전략과 담론이 교차하는 지점에서 재구성된 해석 틀을 제시한다는 점에서 의의를 지닌다.
Abstract
This study examines President Yoon Suk-yeol’s discourse on China by integrating text mining with critical discourse analysis (CDA), aiming to reveal a cognitive structure that transcends the conventional pro-/anti-China dichotomy. The analysis of President Yoon Suk-yeol’s perceptions reveals a multilayered strategy, where the emphasis on “cooperation and peace” is underpinned by normative and security-related conditions. In this context, “cooperation” is not framed as unconditional goodwill or purely amicable engagement, but as conditional—grounded in universal values such as freedom, human rights, and the rule of law—as well as strategic concerns including the North Korean issue and the Indo-Pacific order. This dual logic allows it to function both as a gesture of diplomacy and as an indirect containment strategy. These features suggest that South Korea’s recalibration of its hedging strategy under the structural constraints of U.S.–China rivalry involves not only a selective adoption of normative language but also an effort to hybridize strategic pragmatism with value-based diplomacy. At the same time, it reflects an attempt to reconstruct the autonomy and identity that are central to the discourse of middle-power diplomacy. By positioning South Korea’s China policy at the intersection of strategy and discourse, this study offers an interpretive framework that avoids reducing it to a binary of accommodation versus confrontation, instead highlighting how discourse itself functions as an instrument of diplomatic strategy.
